GO ON TOUR WITH DEL SHORES’ AWARD-WINNING PLAYS:
SORDID LIVES & SOUTHERN BAPTIST SISSIES!

DEL SHORES’ THE OFFICIAL TOUR!

Scheduled Cities Include San Diego, Dallas, Palm Springs, St. Louis, Nashville & Ft. Lauderdale!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

LOS ANGELES, CA – On the heels of selling his new television series Sordid Lives to LOGO, Writer/Director/Producer Del Shores (Queer as Folk, Dharma & Greg) will take to the road with Delta Burke (Designing Woman), Leslie Jordan (Will & Grace), and Dale Dickey (My Name is Earl), along with the entire casts from both Los Angeles productions. The multi-city tour will showcase Shores’ critically acclaimed plays Sordid Lives and Southern Baptist Sissies. Delta Burke made her Los Angeles stage debut in …Sissies, and now the show will mark her tour debut as well. In addition, she will celebration her 50th Birthday with fans in each city! Leslie Jordan, 2006 Emmy Winner for his work on Will & Grace, and Dale Dickey, who can currently be seen on the hit NBC series My Name is Earl as “Patty” the daytime hooker, will perform in both shows!

In January 2006, a Season of Shores was launched to revive of all six of his award-winning plays at Los Angeles’ historic Zephyr Theatre. To-date, three of his plays have been produced, including the GLAAD Award-winner Southern Baptist Sissies, the NAACP winner The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife, and the cult phenomenon Sordid Lives. More than 14,000 people from all around the globe have come to see the plays, making a Season of Shores some of the hottest tickets in town. The season will now go on hold while Shores and his team head across the country with the tour, as well as work on the new television series.

The play Sordid Lives is a black comedy about white trash! In the “coming out” story, three generations of a small Texas family prepare for a funeral, and that’s when the hilarious, sad, trashy truth about their lives runs amuck! Cast members include Leslie Jordan* (Will & Grace, Boston Legal), Dale Dickey* (Domino, My Name is Earl), Patrika Darbo (Days of Our Lives), singer Debby Holiday, singer Sean Wiggins, Mary-Margaret Lewis* (Kalamazoo, Friends), Ann Walker* (Las Vegas, Sex, Love & Secrets), Mitch Carter* (Children of the Corn), Newell Alexander* (HBO’s Big Love), Sarah Hunley* (Ghosts of Mississippi, The Ghost Whisperer), David Cowgill and Rosemary Alexander* (Madhouse) and introducing Jason Dottley. (*also starred in the film version of Sordid Lives)

The play Southern Baptist Sissies is an exploration into the lives of four gay men raised in the church. Through laughter and tears, each story unfolds to reveal a struggle for self-discovery. Cast members include Delta Burke (Designing Women), Leslie Jordan (Will & Grace, Boston Legal), Dale Dickey (Domino, My Name is Earl), Newell Alexander (HBO’[s Big Love), Ted Detwiler (The Ring Two), Joe Patrick Ward, Anthony Cherry (Blast Off!), Emerson Collins (The Secret Garden), Rich Delia (Strong Medicine), T. Ashanti Mozelle (Angels in America: Perestroika), and David Ojalvo (Down Hearted Blues).

Shores’ plays are some of the most honored productions in Los Angeles Theater history, with over 75 awards, from the LADCC, Ovation, Backstage West Garland Awards, LA Weekly Theatre Awards, NAACP and GLAAD. This year, the LA Weekly Theatre Awards honored Del Shores with their Career Achievement Award.

Riverfront Times Names Faces - Best Gay Bar in St. Louis

Cool news! The Riverfront Times Best of St. Louis issue came out this week and Faces on Fourth Street was named "Best Gay Bar" in St. Louis. Thank you to the staff of the RFT. They wrote:

Buff cage-dancers in boxer briefs, cabaret-style drag queens, weekly fetish nights and tri-level dance parties till the break of dawn: The only way a gay club could possibly get better would be to combine pool cues, phallic porn and hot-dog roasters. Well, sweethearts, leave it to Faces to raise the bar that high. This east-side nightclub keeps the beats pumping hard and the bodies pumping harder to the freshest electronica beats from excellent house DJs. Different folks require different strokes, and everyone from posh sugar daddies to the freshly outed can find something fabulous to swoon over. As Faces' 8,000 square feet prove, bigger does mean better.

When We Opened, It Was Illegal for Two Men to Dance

From the Vaults of Faces of Fourth Street:Faces on Fourth Street celebrates our 29 Anniversary in October 2006. in a previous posting, we mentioned that before Faces, there was The Red Bull. One of the founders/creators of the Red Bull and Faces sent us some great memories...we hope to share more about our 29 years serving St. Louis.
Jim wrote:

Just want to thank you for your article.

There was more than one Red Bull on Missouri Avenue. The first one was at 506 Missouri Avenue. Gerry (Jerry) Edwards an I opened it in 1968. We worked on this old condemned building for six months to get it back in working order.

Jerry went to work around the corner at Helen Schroeders another gay bar to learn how to tend bar. We didn't know the first thing about the business. When he went to work at night I would go work on the bar across the street. On his nights off we would slip in the back door of the Bull and we would work putting this old building together.

We had tried 4 times to open a gay bar 4 times we were stopped. We knew what we wanted in a bar that we enjoyed. The Bull opened in August 1968. All we had was nine hundred dollars to buy stock and buy our liquor license.

At that time males were not allowed to dance together. We talked to a gay attorney
who informed us "If no one is touching, it's exercising".

On our dance floor we had many strands of lights hooked up to two modulators which were hooked up to our juke box. They would go on and off with the music. A year later We started what is now called Disco.

Our Drag show on the second floor first started with our home stereo and spotlights made from #10 soup cans with colored lights hooked to a 2x4 on the ceiling controlled by dimmer switches.

1969 we started Go Go Boys on the bar (naked of course)

1969 we also started the first legal Drag show in St. Louis at The French Market
in South Saint Louis.

Because of that Little Red Bull all this entertainment is now possible all over this country. And whats so great about it. It was done by Gay People for Gay People & supported by the greatest group of Gay People in the St Louis area.

Red Bull - A Bar Before It Was An Energy Drink

From the Vaults of Faces on Fourth Street - Before there was a bar with a name taken from a children's book in Sauget, before Velvet, before Mag's, Clementine's, and The Complex poured their first drink, there was Faces on Fourth Street. Faces' founder, Jerry Edwards operated bars called The Red Bull (before there was an energy drink) in two successive locations in East St. Louis and bar called The News Room...then he purchased a closed department store and created Faces. Jerry died several years ago, but the legendary club lives on. Faces on Fourth Street celebrates our 29th anniversary this October. Some of those years have been rough...there have been times when Faces barely survived...not only did we lose several generations of wonderful customers and dear friends to AIDS before an American President would even publicly speak about it, we were also confronted with competitors less then a block away. Over the years, others have tried and failed to copy Faces. If you look to your right as you get off east bound highway 64 at the Fourth Street exit, you can see Club XO. Club XO, now a hip hop club, used to be a gay club called City Center, then the Metroplex. Three different sets of owners of City Center tried to compete with Faces by copying our concept...never creating something new...just copying us...some of the most savvy bar owners... both gay and lesbian were involved...each time, the customers decided to stick with us and our competitors failed.

Faces - Men's & Boy's Dept to Fallout Shelter

From the Vaults of Faces on Fourth Street:
You may have noticed a slightly worn sign painted on the brick above the Basement door of Faces on Fourth Street...the sign reads, "Al's Men and Boy's Shop Entrance"... while appropriate for our Basement Bar, it was actually a sign for the original occupant of the building, a prominent department store. The Faces building was a department store from the late 20's to the 60's, but also served as a bomb/fallout shelter in the 50's & 60's. When Faces' original owner bought the closed department store in 1977, the basement was still full of bomb shelter survival supplies.

Saturday August 19 - Chicago DJ Greg Haus

www.facesnolimits.com

www.djgreghaus.com

It's only bold, new, and different the first time someone does it...

From the Vaults of Faces on Fourth Street: It's sometimes fun to look back at where we started, where we have been, what we have done, and what we have seen...Faces on Fourth Street will be celebrating our 29th anniversary in October 2006. For those of you who are new to the gay scene or just new to the Faces experience, we hope to share fun, little glimpes of our past to help you understand us and maybe make your night @ Faces more interesting. Wednesday nights @ Faces didn't start with our Original Battle of the Amateur Queens. Our Drag Battle evolved over time into one of our most popular show nights while launching the drag careers of many of St. Louis' most popular entertainers (Siren & Madison Elise peformed first @ our Wednesday Drag Battle). We looked at the club scene on Wednesdays and decided to try something that no one else was doing. On March 7, 2001 Faces introduced a new concept to St. Louis...Stroke....our flyers read, "Finally...a reason to go out on Wednesday night..." Stroke @ Faces was all about presenting special guest DJs on a night when no one else was really doing that. We boldly presented a new night with a roster of incredible DJs that included, Lego from Chicago, Chris Allen from Lafitte's in New Orleans, Bill Bennett, at the time he was from Cobalt in Detroit, Rob Thomas from LA, Julian Marsh from LA, Michael Serafini from Chicago, Monty Q. from Miami, as well as Jeff Jones, Mikey B., Billy Coons, and Beezwakz from St. Louis. While we loved the incredible guest DJs, our Stroke night proved hard to sell to St. Louis...we heard from our customers...and Stroke evolved into our Wednesday 18+ College Dance Party with The Original Battle of the Amateur Drag Queens. We continue to bring in incredible guest DJs but we find that it works best for us to do that on weekends. It was around this time that we also featured a weekly night of deep house and progressive trance music every Friday night. We also found it hard to sell house and trance to the gay community and shifted our Friday focus as well. So, next time someone says they are tired of the music and declares that someone needs to change it...that someone needs to try something new and different...that someone needs to shake things up...you can look at them knowingly and smile.

Big News! Legendary Circuit DJ David Knapp Makes Faces Debut

The news you have been waiting for...tell your friends...
Faces on Fourth Street is proud to announce that legendary circuit DJ, David Knapp will make his Faces debut on Saturday, August 26, 2006.
“David’s mixes are so amazing. He can blend anything together,” says superstar DJ Manny Lehman of his Madtizzy brethren. “He is a human Metronome.”

As the original Circuit DJ, David Knapp has assumed many similarly flattering characterizations during an illustrious career that has spanned two decades. Often referred to as The People’s DJ because of his unique ability to make each crowd feel like it’s the most important party he’s ever played, David is truly there for the audience as much as they are there for him.

In the midst of South Beach’s rebirth in the early 90s as the inevitable international nightlife mecca, David Knapp graduated from the University of Miami Law School and passed the Bar Exam. While he could have easily pursued a lucrative career practicing law, he instead decided to follow his passion for music. And he hasn’t looked back once yet.

An early gig at Boomerang (later known as Groove Jet) led to a career-defining residency at Kremlin. It was during his time at the Lincoln Road Mall hotspot (now called Score) that David first got involved with Miami’s White Party, the annual series of benefit events held during Thanksgiving week. David went on to headline the signature Sunday night party at the lavish waterfront Italian Renaissance-style palazzo, Vizcaya, for an astonishing 10 years. With White Party widely considered the crown jewel of the gay party Circuit, David became its honorary, albeit disarmingly humble, king.

While traveling the world making appearances at the multitude of similar Circuit weekends that popped up across the country and around the world, the Billboard-reporting DJ forged key relationships with some of New York’s heaviest hitters. Having duly impressed legendary DJ/producer Junior Vasquez on several occasions, David was invited by the master himself to guest DJ at Palladium and Tunnel, and eventually landed the ultimate guest residency at Twilo in 1999. He’s also played Boy’s Life, Limelight, the Empire State Pride Agenda benefit, Heritage of Pride’s Pier Dance, and has the distinction of being the first non-New York-based DJ to play the Saint-at-Large Black Party two years in a row. David currently plays numerous parties throughout the year at Splash.

Another similarly prolific alliance with über-promoter John Blair resulted in David sharing a residency at Roxy with Victor Calderone and his being commissioned to remix Volume 1 of Blair’s NYC’s Best DJs CD series. David has also remixed several White Party benefit CDs for Centaur Music, as well as others in the Global Groove and Party Groove [?] series. Gentleman’s Quarterly also named David one of the six most influential DJs in America in its July 2000 issue. He was also featured alongside Danny Tenaglia, Eddie X, Junior Vasquez and Victor Calderone in the 2002 [?] documentary about global DJs called Dance Culture In The Mix.

In early 2000, David signed on with Madtizzy where George Dellinger has managed his infinitely fertile career since. David has also helped scout new talent for George to bring onboard. His efforts so far have yielded one of the Circuit’s most in-demand talents signing with Madtizzy -- Chad Jack.

With past and present residencies at many of North America’s most influential nightclubs under his belt, including San Francisco’s Sanctuary parties, Coliseum in Fort Lauderdale, as well as regular trips to spin at Le Queen in Paris and Dome in Tel Aviv, David concentrates much of his effort these days on local gigs in his current hometown of Atlanta at Jungle, Red Chair, and the highly acclaimed Fruitcake Production events. David will also headlines the prestigious Joining Hearts event. Having established a family there with his partner Scott, adopted son Ryan (who, incidentally, celebrates his birthday Winter Party Weekend), and adopted daughter Kira, David is also building a studio and plans to produce and remix music with local colleagues Greg Dean and Dave Hansen. David has most recently debuted original remixes of Gioia, Funky Green Dogs, Lonnie Gordon, DJ Vic, and Amerie.

There remain few parties or cities David has yet to play, but among the many highlights are parties most recently in Sao Paolo, Rio, Thailand, Zurich, Mexico City, Mykonos, Paris, and Tel Aviv and just recently played Atlanta, San Francisco, Toronto and DC Pride events. David will be doing Circuit Asia in Thailand in the fall, and will be playing the big SLDN aircraft carrrier benefit “Momentum on the Midway” in San Diego for the second year in a row. He also has enjoyed many recurrent gigs at Avalon in Boston, Chicago’s Crobar, Hydrate, and Circuit, Mark Baker’s Arabian Knights after-hours in Orlando during Gay Disney, and the sunset cruise in Provincetown during the July 4th holiday. A highly accomplished and archetypal DJ who helped frame the modern party paradigm, David Knapp is a legend in his own right who continues to influence trends in music while entertaining legions of fans around the world. And he shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Saturday, August 19 - DJ Greg Haus & DJ Chester

That's right...two back to back I Love Saturday events. Saturday, August 19, DJ Greg Haus returns to Faces on Fourth Street. Tell your friends to save Saturdays in August for some of the hottest music @ Faces on Fourth Street. Our resident DJ's are awesome. DJ Pavel opens on Saturday, August 19. GREG HAUS has been a respected part of Chicago's electronic music scene since the early '90s. His sound is edgy but accessible, drawing inspiration from the fringes of club culture to blend some of the most unique and infectious mixes of music you'll hear anywhere in the United States. Greg is fiercely dedicated to bringing new sounds to the masses but always manages to throw in a few classics or rare versions of more mainstream tunes.

In 2006 he has had the honor of playing dj sets with electro sleaze goddess Peaches, JD Samson of Le Tigre, and Diplo – plus a special set for "First Fridays" @ Chicago’s Museum Of Contemporary Art in honor of Pride month and the debut of acclaimed photographer Wolfgang Tillmans’ latest exhibit. “Cosmix” – his weekly Friday residency at Berlin Nightclub – has been a popular late night destination for over 10 years, and he can frequently be heard at Chicago hotspots Funky Buddha Lounge, Smart Bar, and Lakeview Broadcasting Company. He has also held residencies and played gigs at such diverse clubs as Hydrate, Crobar, Dome Room, Spin, Metro, Club 950, Neo, and Darkroom.

Greg has brought his talents to clubs and festivals throughout the country, and has worked as a freelance music journalist for several local and national music publications. His debut remix release for the track “Gotta Know” by NYC vocalist Madelin Zero (who has collaborated with Circ & ATB) is now available on Indecent Media / Radikal Records, and can be purchased via iTunes, Napster, Amazon.com, and various other music outlets. Greg is currently working on new remix projects that will hopefully be out sometime this fall or early 2007.

Joining Greg @ Faces for a special feature set is DJ CHESTER - Berlin Nightclub's Saturday Night Co-Resident. Originally from Detroit, MI - Chester's diverse musical repertoire and reputation for outrageous, sexy fashions are sure to please.

I Love Saturday Returns August 12 - DJ Greg Drescher

If you missed our last I Love Saturday event, you missed a great
party with a twist. Refreshing your memory, DJ Zach Stower and
Drag Diva Siren introduced I Love Saturday @ Faces on Fourth
Street. Tell your friends that I Love Saturday returns Saturday,
August 12 with DJ Greg Drescher (Hydrate-Chicago) spinning in the
Main Room. Greg last spun at Faces on Fourth Street for our
Gay.com Come Together Party. He became a St. Louis favorite when
Zach Stowers brought him to Faces for a theme party. Born and
bred on the East Coast, Greg Drescher’s musical style derives
from his early days in New York City’s nightclubs and from more
recent years in Chicago. The influence of both cities can be
heard in Greg’s music as he uniquely blends progressive house,
sultry vocals, circuit anthems and hard-hitting tribal beats in
his sets. The other blended ingredient in every Greg Drescher set
is his obvious passion for the music. A Harvard-educated attorney
by day, Greg jumpstarted his career as a professional DJ by first
spinning at the legendary Crobar Chicago. Since then, his sound
has been heard in Chicago’s most popular clubs, including Hydrate
Chicago, Excalibur, Circuit Nightclub, Berlin, Felt and
@mosphere. Greg’s talents have been requested by the top DJs and
promoters in the industry as he’s opened for Tracy Young, Tony
Moran, Manny Lehman, David Knapp, Lydia Prim and Roland Belmares.
Recognizing a local rising star, the Hearts Foundation has
selected Greg for several of their events, including the Ignition
Party at Fireball 2004, Chicago Pride 2003, the VIP Closing Party
at Fireball 2003 and Refuel 2002.

More recently, Greg has been extending his reach beyond Chicago
with an event last summer at the historic Pines Pavilion on Fire
Island and his international debut in Tel Aviv. While he
currently maintains as monthly residency at Crobar and a weekly
spot at Hydrate, Drescher has become involved with Tracy Young’s
new record label, FEROSH RECORDS (www.ferosh.com)… and this is
only the beginning. Stay tuned for the buzz on this hot new
talent and his ascent in the industry!

MySpace Owned By Conservative News Corp. (Fox News Owner)

Yes, Faces on Fourth Street has joined the MySpace community, and we are proud of our list of great friends, but it is sometimes a good idea to follow the money, to see who actually controls our new online community.

From BBC News:
What Myspace means to Murdoch
Analysis
By Jeremy Scott-Joynt
BBC News business reporter

Rupert Murdoch has outlined online far-reaching strategies before
Just three months ago, news magnate Rupert Murdoch made an unusual admission.

He had realised, he told a high-powered audience at the American Society of Newspaper Editors in Washington DC, that he had got something rather important rather wrong.

News Corporation, the global media group he controls, had failed properly to engage with the online world - and risked losing its hard-won position in news as a result.

As a "digital immigrant" - as he described himself - he acknowledged he found it difficult to visualise how News Corp should change its ways. But he had no doubt that radical change was coming, and that it was inevitable.

Commentators took the unusual "mea culpa" as a sign that News Corp was gearing up for a wholesale revamp of its approach to the internet.

On 19 July, what appears to be the first really substantive part of the new strategy swung into action: the purchase, for $580m, of the firm behind the wildly popular Myspace.com online community.

Deja vu?

Cynics may charge that Mr Murdoch has been here before.

In 1999, another keynote speech laid out lofty ambitions for News Corp online - only for several well-financed operations to close down within months of their launch.

Young people don't want to rely on a God-like figure from above to tell them what's important

Rupert Murdoch

Before that came failed initiatives such as Delphi Internet in the mid-1990s, an online service which mingled News Corp's UK content with US material and failed to capture anyone's imagination, and an abortive internet service provider experiment called LineOne.

Everyone's an editor

Even so, buying Intermix - and thus Myspace - seems to match the requirements Mr Murdoch laid down in his 13 April speech.

The central message was that the days of newspapers editing content into a one-size-fits-all package to be consumed without question by the reader were numbered.

Young people "don't want to rely on a God-like figure from above to tell them what's important," Mr Murdoch said.

"And to carry the religion analogy a bit further, they certainly don't want news presented as gospel.

"Instead, they want their news on demand, when it works for them. They want control over their media, instead of being controlled by it. They want to question, to probe, to offer a different angle."

Myspace fits neatly into that definition. It is a network of pages - most set up by individuals, some by musicians and other creative types - each mixing self-generated text and pictures, links to other content elsewhere, and streamed music and video to create networks of friends and contacts.

The result is a densely interwoven community, which its adherents - 14 million a month, by some measures - say is highly addictive.

Is Myspace the key to News Corp's new strategy?

Not that different, in fact, from Mr Murdoch's description of a world where users act as their own editors, choosing their own news and content from the huge range of possibilities available online.

Of course, every page of Myspace content contains adverts - and Mr Murdoch left his listeners in no doubt that their books would bleed red ink unless they found ways of exploiting the boom in online advertising.

Backing brands

What remains unclear is where the other part of Mr Murdoch's vision fits in.

Later in his speech, he talked of the importance of brands - the heart, after all, of the News Corp empire.

Despite the doomsaying, newspaper journalists and editors were perfectly positioned to keep supplying the core content on which the communications communities would be built, he said.

"We have the experience, the brands, the resources, and the know-how to get it done. We have unique content to differentiate ourselves in a world where news is becoming increasingly commoditized."

That may prove challenging - after all, suspicion of existing media outlets is rife in weblogs and other chatty outposts of the web.

Then again, earlier in July News Corp announced the launch of Fox Interactive Media, a hub for Fox news, sport and entertainment in the US.

Myspace, News Corp says, could drive traffic to Fox Interactive Media.

And most importantly, Myspace has detailed logs of its users' preferences, online behaviour and personal information.

That could help the company tailor what it does to the ever-more-discerning market which Mr Murdoch believes he has identified.

MySpace Crashes After Blackout

From BBC News:
MySpace shut down by US heatwave

MySpace is the world's most popular social network
MySpace, the world's most popular networking website, has restarted after being shut down for more than half a day following a power cut.
The company blamed the closure on record-breaking heat in Los Angeles where its data servers are held.

The high temperatures caused "massive power outages" a spokesman for the company said.

MySpace lets users build a personalised home page and has almost three million visitors each month.

A MySpace spokesperson said: "Due to the record breaking heat in Los Angeles over the weekend the area where MySpace's servers are stored had massive power outages.

"With power resumed, the network is now up and running."

The spokesman said backup generators at the data centre had failed.

Earlier in the day visitors to the website were greeted with a game of Pacman and a message saying the service hoped to be back up and running within the hour.

The website was bought by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp for $580m last July after it proved to be a huge success with youth audiences online.

Data centres usually have the ability to connect to at least two power sources

Vanessa Evans, Linx

The closure of the service, albeit temporarily, will be a blow for News Corp and MySpace in such a competitive environment.

Bebo, one of MySpace's keenest rivals, has been catching MySpace in terms of audience numbers in recent months.

A number of MySpace users posted comments on other blogging services - such as Live Journal and Wordpress - about the temporary closure of the site.

Vanessa Evans, sales and marketing manager at internet infrastructure firm Linx, said companies typically took steps to ensure a power outage would not topple a website.

"Data centres usually have the ability to connect to at least two power sources so that they can switch in case one source is lost.

"I would be surprised for any large company taking space on a data centre which did not have this option."

Yahoo

Ms Evans said that while she could not comment on the MySpace problem directly, she said many companies hosted information at more than one data centre.

Meanwhile, UK users of Yahoo! were without a number of services, including e-mail and instant messenger, on Sunday due to a power failure.

A spokesman told BBC News: "Yahoo! search, Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Messenger were quickly restored to normal operation as were many of our content services."

"The remaining services are returning to normal now. We apologise to any of our users who may have been inconvenienced."

MySpace Users Hit by Hidden Spyware

From BBC News:
MySpace faces security problems
By Mark Ward
Technology Correspondent, BBC News website

MySpace is the world's most popular social network
More than one million MySpace users could have been caught out by a banner advert that installs spyware via a Windows bug.

Those who fell victim were bombarded with pop-up adverts and had their net browsing habits monitored by the malicious software.

Reports suggest the advert has been running on MySpace for about a week.

The discovery of the rogue advert is only the latest in a series of security problems MySpace has suffered.

Security lapse

Only those who use MySpace via Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser and have not patched - or fixed - that program against the so-called Windows MetaFile (WMF) bug are vulnerable to the rogue advert.

The WMF bug was discovered in January 2006 and Microsoft produced a downloadable fix for it soon after. However, not all Windows users will have installed the patch and many people are likely to be vulnerable.

US computer security firm iDefense discovered the dangerous banner advert that has been seen on many MySpace pages. The code hidden in the advert exploits the WMF bug which preys on a weakness in the way Windows handles images.

On an unpatched browser the dangerous advert silently installs programs that pipe pop-up adverts to users and watches what they do online.

Digital detective work by iDefense and reported by the Washington Post uncovered computer servers which logged how many times the adware was installed.

Before the servers were shut down they had racked up more than one million installs.

"This is a criminal act," said Hemanshu Nigam, MySpace chief security officer. "This ad is being delivered by ad networks who distribute these ads to over a thousand sites across the Internet in addition to ours."

"We are working to have these ad networks remove this ad so that they do not appear on our site," he said.

Chris Boyd, director of Malware research at Facetime Security Labs, said sites such as MySpace and Orkut often felt like "gated communities" and made people feel more secure than they should.

"They might click something that outside of that community they would usually think twice about," he added.

MySpace users are being urged to take care
"Any site has an increased risk of attack where a lot of customisation is possible," said Mr Boyd. "This level of customisation is what both attracts people to use the service, and what causes the most security issues."

Like many other blogging sites MySpace allows users to change their profile and alter the appearance of their personal page. But this ability to alter the basic code of the profile has been abused by some MySpace users and other companies.

In mid-July Mr Boyd discovered that an adware company was covertly using MySpace to circulate video clips that also installed programs that bombarded users with adverts. The company encouraged people to put the video clips in their profile and push them to other MySpace users they know.

In another incident, one MySpace user exploited a vulnerability in the widely used Flash program to re-direct people to a site questioning who was behind the 9/11 attacks on the US. This too exploited the flexibility of MySpace profiles.

Administrators at MySpace issued a warning about this re-direct and urged users to upgrade to version 9.0 of Flash to avoid the problem.

Mr Nigam urged MySpace users to follow basic security practices to avoid falling victim to any scam. He said people should update their copy of Windows, install patches for browsers and keep anti-virus and anti-spyware software up to date.

Other security researchers have discovered fake MySpace toolbars that also install adware.

One of the more famous MySpace security incidents took place in October 2005 by a user nicknamed "Samy". He added some code to his profile which automatically added himself to the list of friends many MySpace users maintain. Within hours he had racked up more than one million MySpace "buddies".

MySpace was shut down briefly while the offending code was removed from all the profiles it had infected.

Saturday Updates - We Are Closed Tonight

We have more bad news to report...please pass it on to your
friends. Faces on Fourth Street is closed Saturday, July 22,
2006. This is probably the first time in our 28 year history
that we have not only been closed for 4 days, but closed on a
Saturday too. The City of East St. Louis has extended their
curfew and prohibition on liquor sales through Saturday, July
22, 2006. They have eased the curfew, with the curfew and liquor
sales ban starting at midnight tonight, but that really doesn't
help us or any of the other small businesses trying to recover
from this storm and blackout. We are all eager to open up, go
back to work, and welcome our guests back. While Faces on Fourth
Street has power and AC, most of the city is still dark and may
be under a boil order because of power outages at water
treatment plants. We know this has been rough on all of our
customers. We appreciate your patience and look forward to
seeing you all again. When we are finally allowed to go back to
our regular operating hours, we will need everyone's help and
support. We hope you will be eager to come back.

We will continue to post updates as we gain new information.
While we have no news on Sunday, yet, we hope open Sunday, July
23 @ 5 PM for our regularSunday afternoon Keg Party with Quarter
(25 cent) draft Pabst Blue Ribbon. Beyond that, we have been
advised that things will return to normal as power is restored
to the city. We hope to be able to report good news about our
Sunday 18+ Dance Party with Siren's Killer Queens. Watch our
emails and website for updates.

We understand that Novak's plans to open their patio only
tonight, with a live band (powered by generators), as they too
are still without power.

Friday, July 21, 2006

Friday, July 21st - We Are Closed Tonight

Friday, July 21, 2006 - We are sorry to report that the City of
East St. Louis has extended their 8 PM curfew for one more night
. Basically the city is locked down after 8 PM with no liquor
sales alllowed and no one allowed on the streets. While we have
power, most of the city is still dark and they have extended the
curfew for public safety. We disagree with this decision, not
only do we and our staff need the money, but we know that many
of you are without power, a little stressed out, and in need of
some Faces-style R & R. .

Faces on Fourth Street will be closed Friday, July 21, 2006. We
are sorry that we can't be there for you to cool off Friday
night and hope to have better news for you tomorrow. Please tell
your friends to check back with us on Saturday and we look
forward to seeing you soon.

DJ Scotty Thomson in Unzipped Magazine

From Unzipped Magazine April, 2006:
Great Scott
New York City club Avalon. DJ Scotty Thomson is on the turntables as drag performers Kevin and Koko Aviance hit the stage. They bring up a hapless male from the dance floor, tie him to a coat rack, and strip him to his undies. After doing some runway passes around him, the two Aviances walk offstage to work the dance floor—leaving the guy up there for 20 minutes, till security finally unties him. “People still talk about that night,” grins Thomson. But what about Scotty’s own sexy exploits

Scotty has a face and body that are definitely made for sin—and we suspect he’s had many opportunities to do dirty dance-floor deeds—but he prefers to focus on music. He started spinning in 1999 and was what he calls an “apartment DJ” until 2001, when two of New York’s biggest club promoters, John Blair and Beto Sutter, hired him to spin during happy hour at the Manhattan hot spot XL. “After just two nights as the happy hour DJ, I was moved up to Thursday nights,” he says. “Two weeks after that, I became resident DJ in the Chapel at [notorious NYC club] Limelight.” He made such an impact that Limelight denizens began referring to his Sunday-night gig as “Scotty T.’s Chapel.” “I was completely taken aback to know that a room in one of the most famous clubs ever [was named] after me, after only a month of being in the business.”

One reason for Scotty’s immediate popularity is his eclectic playlist: He mixes dance-floor classics with the newest imported vinyl. “The crowd knows I’ll be playing some hits, but I’m also obsessed with finding fresh tracks for every performance. It keeps me excited.” What do these new records sound like? “Soulful and deep vocal tracks—hot records that resemble the music from the mid to late ’90s.”

Scotty’s musical formula is working well—he has residencies at New York’s XL and the clubs Five and Nation in Washington, D.C. This year he played Miami’s White Party, and he has upcoming DJ gigs in Boston, Denver, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. He’s busy, but he wouldn’t have it any other way: “I love to entertain. I get so involved in my music, creating fresh mixes on the fly and changing things around every time I spin so that I make each performance unique. I get in a zone, and 10-hour sets go by in a flash.”

Make no mistake, we love Scotty Thomson’s music. But isn’t there even one dirty DJ story he can tell us? Pretty please?

“Well, I had a boyfriend for four years, until June 2004. After a very rough breakup, it took me almost a year to get my confidence up and feel good about myself,” he admits. We immediately feel bad for bringing up the subject. Is he feeling better now? Thankfully, he says yes. “It’s uncanny how people can sense confidence or the lack thereof. Most of the time I’m hidden up in the booth where no one can see me, but my change in mood seems to have projected itself way out into the clubs lately.”

Judging from the dancing throngs of sweaty, smiling guys at his every performance, we’d agree: Scotty Thomson’s mood is indeed infectious. And now that he’s single, we’ve got an idea that might help this hot DJ get rid of any remaining blues: Hold on a sec while we strip to our undies and grab that coat rack.
