From Unzipped Magazine April, 2006:
Great Scott
New York City club Avalon. DJ Scotty Thomson is on the turntables as drag performers Kevin and Koko Aviance hit the stage. They bring up a hapless male from the dance floor, tie him to a coat rack, and strip him to his undies. After doing some runway passes around him, the two Aviances walk offstage to work the dance floor—leaving the guy up there for 20 minutes, till security finally unties him. “People still talk about that night,” grins Thomson. But what about Scotty’s own sexy exploits
Scotty has a face and body that are definitely made for sin—and we suspect he’s had many opportunities to do dirty dance-floor deeds—but he prefers to focus on music. He started spinning in 1999 and was what he calls an “apartment DJ” until 2001, when two of New York’s biggest club promoters, John Blair and Beto Sutter, hired him to spin during happy hour at the Manhattan hot spot XL. “After just two nights as the happy hour DJ, I was moved up to Thursday nights,” he says. “Two weeks after that, I became resident DJ in the Chapel at [notorious NYC club] Limelight.” He made such an impact that Limelight denizens began referring to his Sunday-night gig as “Scotty T.’s Chapel.” “I was completely taken aback to know that a room in one of the most famous clubs ever [was named] after me, after only a month of being in the business.”
One reason for Scotty’s immediate popularity is his eclectic playlist: He mixes dance-floor classics with the newest imported vinyl. “The crowd knows I’ll be playing some hits, but I’m also obsessed with finding fresh tracks for every performance. It keeps me excited.” What do these new records sound like? “Soulful and deep vocal tracks—hot records that resemble the music from the mid to late ’90s.”
Scotty’s musical formula is working well—he has residencies at New York’s XL and the clubs Five and Nation in Washington, D.C. This year he played Miami’s White Party, and he has upcoming DJ gigs in Boston, Denver, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. He’s busy, but he wouldn’t have it any other way: “I love to entertain. I get so involved in my music, creating fresh mixes on the fly and changing things around every time I spin so that I make each performance unique. I get in a zone, and 10-hour sets go by in a flash.”
Make no mistake, we love Scotty Thomson’s music. But isn’t there even one dirty DJ story he can tell us? Pretty please?
“Well, I had a boyfriend for four years, until June 2004. After a very rough breakup, it took me almost a year to get my confidence up and feel good about myself,” he admits. We immediately feel bad for bringing up the subject. Is he feeling better now? Thankfully, he says yes. “It’s uncanny how people can sense confidence or the lack thereof. Most of the time I’m hidden up in the booth where no one can see me, but my change in mood seems to have projected itself way out into the clubs lately.”
Judging from the dancing throngs of sweaty, smiling guys at his every performance, we’d agree: Scotty Thomson’s mood is indeed infectious. And now that he’s single, we’ve got an idea that might help this hot DJ get rid of any remaining blues: Hold on a sec while we strip to our undies and grab that coat rack.

Recording Artist Thea Austin Returns Pride Weekend
Recording artist Thea Austin returns to Faces on Fourth Street to celebrate Pride Weekend wih a special live performance Saturday, June 24 @ 3 AM (Sunday morning).
From Josephine Baker to Sade, Lisa Stansfield to Annie Lennox, international divas have always captured the ears and hearts of listeners around the world, including those in America. Thea Austin is no exception. As the lead singer of the mega-group Snap, Thea took the world by storm and made a major impact on the US market, something Thea welcomed. While she was being hailed as a new international diva, in actuality she is a full-fledged American from the heartland of Pennsylvania. So what's a nice hometown girl doing in such an international spotlight?
Born in Pittsburgh, Thea has been fronting bands and honing her vocal skills since she was in her early teens. Several years ago, her want for vocal success brought her to Los Angeles, looking for a recording contract. Also a talented writer, Thea's love of music led her to a position as a staff writer at a major music industry magazine, The R & B Report. She then got a taste of the business of promotion and hype, as well as insight into the workings of major labels and the shaping of new artists. Her contacts continued to grow.
That drive led her out of the country to Japan, growing as a vocalist and experiencing new cultures. Upon returning to the US she immediately began work on a solo project. An accomplished lyricist, she penned songs with several successful producers. Her travels led her to Penny Ford, the former lead singer of Snap, who sensed Thea's talent and introduced her to the Snap organization. Thea was immediately whisked to Germany to begin work on Snap's album "The Madman's Return" with rapper Turbo B. She not only sang, but co-wrote many of the cuts. Once the album was complete and the first single released, a video was shot and a European tour planned.
As the lead singer of Snap, Thea was on top of the world. “The Madman’s Return” was released in March, 1992 and the first single, "Colour of Love," soared into the top ten across Europe, further demonstrating that Snap was a force to be reckoned with. Thea began playing venues from Italy to Germany, Turkey to the Red Sea. Suddenly, she was catapulted to international stardom. The second single "Rhythm Is a Dancer" was even more successful, taking a firm grasp on the number one position on numerous Billboard charts, including the Eurochart, Hits of the UK and charts in Germany, Italy and countless other nations, while the video landed at number one on MTV Europe and in CNN’s top twenty. Thea’s unmistakable vocals and writing on “Rhythm Is a Dancer” would go on to make it one of the most memorable dance tracks of the 90’s. "I have been very blessed to have such success with Snap across the globe. I cannot count how many lessons I have learned and how much total experience this has been.”
In October of 1992, Thea and Snap had the distinct honor and privilege of opening for the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson, at his concert in Bucharest, Rumania during his Dangerous tour. The performance was broadcast live on radio and shown on television in 61 countries. In addition, Michael Jackson in Concert in Bucharest: The Dangerous Tour was later broadcast on HBO.
That success has not been difficult for her to achieve. Her strong, sultry voice coupled with her beauty, has made her a natural. Her personal music is message driven, as she tries to combine the best of today's sounds with lyrics that speak simple truths. Thea is always working to expand her horizons. Not only a vocalist, she is an accomplished lyricist and producer, evidenced by her writing, co-writing, and producing numerous tracks for her first solo project "Cutoff" with the German producers T. Copperfield and T. Noise. The first single, “Don’t Stop” and follow-up, "Move," were released in 1994 and had success in the European top 40 charts. In 1996, Coconut Records released “Magic Touch,” “Vibe,” and "Let Go,” three singles by Cymurai featuring Thea with remixes by ATB.
Thea has also worked with many notable members of the international music community, including Chris Cox & Barry Harris (Thunderpuss); DJ Irene; Mark Pomeroy & Brian Tappert (Soulsearcher); Full Intention, DJ Dealer & Craig C (The Pound Boys); Paul Chambers (550 Rekords); Pete Amato; and Karel to name but a few. In 1998, Thea had an unforgettable time singing background vocals on Engelbert Humperdinck's "The Dance Album" with fellow dance diva Abigail.
Other tracks that have benefited from the voice of Thea include Turbo B's "I'm Not Dead," Heart Attack's single "Eye of the Tiger," Desire’s “When I Loose Control,” and "You Won't Know What Hit Cha" with BFL. In 1998 Thea worked with the renowned team of Barry Harris and Chris Cox (aka Thunderpuss), on the single "I Just Wanna Be Your Everything" which made it on to Billboard Magazine’s Dance & Club Play chart.
1999 found Thea as the voice behind Soulsearcher's massive international hit "I Can't Get Enough" which still gets more than its fair share of radio play. In 2000, Thea and Soulsearcher scored again with the number 13 UK hit "Do It to Me Again,” which Thea co-wrote with producer Mark Pomeroy. Perhaps one of the most memorable events in Thea’s career was performing with Soulsearcher at Prince Charles’ Prince’s Trust’s “Party in the Park” in London in 1999. Packing Hyde Park for the benefit were more than 120,000 people who came to see performances from some of pop music’s biggest stars, including Ricky Martin, Mary J. Blige, Geri Halliwell, and Duane Harden.
In 2001, Thea collaborated with Pusaka, the team of Chris Cox and DJ Irene, to record "You're the Worst Thing for Me (I'm Addicted)." Written by Thea, Chris Cox and DJ Irene, it was heralded as THE anthem for the summer of 2001 and rushed out as a remix single by Tommy Boy Records. It zoomed to the top of the Billboard dance charts and hit number one. The track garnered major radio play and has been featured on the hit TV shows "Queer As Folk" & "Sex in the City." The hit song can also be heard being played throughout the hit independent film, PUNKS, starring Vanessa Williams, written and directed by Patrik-Ian Polk and produced by Tracey Edmonds and her husband Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds.
Without taking much of a break from globetrotting in support of Pusaka's "You're The Worst Thing For Me," Thea Austin has found the time to create three brand new songs for the beginning of 2002. "First Class Freak," co-written by Thea and master remixer Chris Cox will be released on the eagerly anticipated compilation CD "Barry Harris and Chris Cox Present Thunderpuss" from Tommy Boy. "Funky Music" was written by Thea and co-produced with DJ Dealer and Craig C, better known as the Pound Boys. "Funky Music" will be released on the Pound Boys own label, Look At You Records. The track will also be presented for the first time publicly at the Winter Music Conference in Miami Beach. "Looking at the Space," a social and political pop song written by Ingo will be released by EMI-Germany in the spring. Plans are in motion for a video shoot in Los Angeles and a tour in support of the track. Says Thea, "When you got a lot of desire you will find a way to get what you want!" Desire is not something that Thea is short on.
Thea Austin fits many categories: sultry diva, powerful vocalist, producer, lyricist, stunning beauty, international performer. Yet her music defies categorization and crosses all world boundaries. She has established a foothold in the global music community and has used it as a foundation for a brilliant and successful solo career.

Sunday Night Was Awesome

Did you make it to Faces on Fourth Street Sunday night for U Can
Dance? Why not? If you missed it, you missed an awesome party. The dance
floor was packed. The bar was packed. The show was great. The go
go bois were hot. U Can Dance was a new party concept planned,
organized, promoted, and executed by Siren and her BF Charlie
with a lot of help from a great showcast. Combining performers
with non-stop high energy music, the crowd was on our dance
floor all night. Sunday was great fun. Thank you to everyone who
came out on Sunday. Thank you to everyone who helped promote U
Can Dance on MySpace. Thank you to Siren, Charlie, our cast, and
Rosee (he said he was worn out from the fast pace in the DJ
booth) for making it all work. Please tell your friends what
they missed and let us know if you think we should do it again.
After a slow Friday & Saturday, we worried that all of St. Louis
had taken a roadtrip to Kansas City for their Pridefest...which
made our Sunday U can Dance success so amazing. Everyone, thank
you again.

Why Pride Matters
From Advocate.com:
Why pride matters
In the current print issue of The Advocate, Hollywood publicist Michael Levine argues that pride festivals are bad PR. His fellow Hollywood publicist respectfully--and strongly--disagrees.
By Howard Bragman
An Advocate.com exclusive posted, May 31, 2006
I was reading Michael Levine’s commentary on why gay pride celebrations are bad for our image [in the June 6 print issue of The Advocate], and I must say I couldn’t disagree more. Let me tell you how I come to this conclusion.
First, I have been practicing public relations for more than 25 years. I have had the honor and privilege of representing nearly every major LGBT organization in the United States, including Christopher Street West, the group behind Los Angeles’s gay pride celebration. I have participated in the parade as its publicist, as an honoree (Gay Businessman of the Year), as a marcher, and as a spectator.
You can’t discuss the public implications of gay pride without understanding a historical perspective. Thirty years ago, when these celebrations were in their infancy, our community was invisible. I repeat, invisible. Mainstream news organizations did not cover our community; our civil rights struggles had no legitimacy; and if we were covered, it usually focused on negative or stereotypical images.
The gay pride parades were our moment. Our earliest pioneers stood in public and said, “I’m here, I’m queer, get used to it.” While that wasn’t the language they used, necessarily, it was certainly the spirit in which the parades were presented.
Now, when we march down Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, Calif.--a city where the majority of the elected officials are openly gay--it’s easy to forget that what has become an afternoon celebration was once an act of remarkable courage.
And who were our earliest heroes? They were the very members of our community who had no choice but to be out--the butchest lesbians and the most effeminate men; leather enthusiasts; and our political pioneers.
We have grown and matured as a community, and our parades now present a much more diverse cross section of our population. But at the beginning it was the few and the proud, and all of us should be deeply indebted to those who talked the talk and walked the walk. Without their efforts, we would not be where we are today.
The second point I need to make is that gay pride celebrations were not created for the media. They were created for us. They bring us together in droves, and they inspire a sense of community. No one can go to a gay pride parade and not be amazed at the numbers and the diversity of our people and not feel a sense of kinship and community.
One of the most moving moments of my entire life was marching in the parade with my parents in the PFLAG contingent. The cheering was amazing. My mother started crying and said, “This must be what if feels like to win Wimbledon.”
Attendance has changed at parades. Thousands of our straight friends now join us, not to gawk or hold up signs telling us we’re going to hell, but to share our celebration and party They know that without gay people, parades wouldn’t exist. In fact, parties probably wouldn’t exist. And if they did, the partygoers would be poorly dressed, the food and decor would suck, and the whole event would be bo-o-oring.
I’m not ignorant of the points that Mr. Levine was trying to make. It does seem that the media likes to focus on Dykes on Bikes and Tom of Finland–esque men in harnesses and leather jockstraps.
Do the mainstream media need to present a more accurate and balanced picture of our community? Of course they do. They need to get away from the stereotypes and take a more balanced look at every community, not just ours. It’s hard to do this in a 90-second news story, but we have to keep pressure on them to show realistic and positive portrayals of us--a lesbian firefighter, gay parents with an HIV+ child, or a transgender teacher sharing textbook and life lessons with children.
When I was doing PR for Christopher Street West, I used to take the media to the kitchen cabinet refinishing booth to show them that we’re just as boring as the rest of the world. But I never denied our more flamboyant brothers and sisters--they are us, and they have as rightful a place in our community as a Log Cabin Republican in a Brooks Brothers suit.
Even more justified, in my mind.

World Baked Bike Ride June 10

In cities around the world Saturday, cyclists risked saddle rash – and possible arrest – to take a spin in the buff in order to protest the world's dependence on oil, RAW STORY has found.
"It is time to stop indecent exposure to automobile emissions and to celebrate the power and individuality of our bodies," says the Website for World Naked Bike Ride, the loosely knit organization that promotes the annual event.
Hundreds turned out in Madrid, Barcelona and Pamplona for what Spain calls the Ciclonudista or 'Nudecycle.' "We feel naked when up against traffic because people don't see the bicycle as just another means of transport," one participating cyclist told Reuters.
Organizers expected 500 cyclists in London and Brighton, up from 250 in last year’s event, according to ITN.
"The ride is fun, but has a serious side as well," one rider told the BBC. "By going naked, we show our vulnerability as cyclists in the traffic."
In the United States, 100 cyclists were expected in Burlington, Vt. The nudity, a participating cyclist told WCAX, "is a real symbol against commercialism."
It also provides amusement, said Michael Nedell, a Burlington organizer. "When you get a lot of naked people on bikes, people tend to smile at you," he told the Hartford Courant.
Nudity is legal in Burlington, but in many other places participants knew they were risking trouble with the law. "We don't expect everyone to be OK with this," an Illinois resident told the Chicago Tribune publication RedEye, according to UPI. "We're just trying to have a good time and raise awareness."
"The World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) group was created by Daniel and Conrad to help coordinate a large international naked bike ride between many different activist groups across the World," according to the WNBR Website. "The World's first international naked bike ride in 2004 was a collaboration between the WNBR group which rode on June 12th and Manifestación Ciclonudista in Spain which rode on June 19th."
But according to Britain's Press Association, the nude bicyclists failed to distract anyone since it took place during a World Cup Match.
"As millions dropped everything to cheer England on to victory in its World Cup game, behind their backs naked cyclists, international rugby and a bizarre milk souring stunt passed them by," reported the Press Association.

Frequent ejaculation is good for your health!
From Bloomberg.com, good news...masturbate your way to better health..."April 6 (Bloomberg) -- Frequent sexual activity may reduce a man's risk of prostate cancer, according to research in the April 7 Journal of the American Medical Association.
The cancer risk in men reporting more than 20 monthly ejaculations was 33 percent less than in other men, the Harvard University study showed. Earlier studies tied a high sex drive and prostate cancer to elevated testosterone, so some scientists had proposed a link between sexual activity and the disease.
More research may help determine how sex might be protecting some men from prostate cancer, the investigators said. The results shouldn't be used to encourage men to intensify sexual activity, they said.
``Men worry that by being very active, they may put themselves at increased risk,'' said Michael F. Leitzmann, the lead researcher now at the National Cancer Institute. ``Looking at the data in a little bit more detail, our findings suggest that ejaculation may even be associated with a slight decrease in prostate cancer risk.''
The scientists defined sexual activity as ejaculation from intercourse, masturbation or during dreams. The men surveyed reported the average number of ejaculations they had a month from 20 to 29 years old, 40 to 49 years, and in the past year.
Almost 30,000 health professionals, 1,449 of whom developed prostate cancer, were surveyed. Researchers found that an active sex life wasn't linked to a higher cancer risk in most men.
How It May Work
There are several ways in which frequent ejaculations may protect against prostate cancer, the researchers said. The activity may flush out a buildup of toxins in the prostate, lessen development of tiny crystals linked to some cancers, and improve the immune system's response to cancer, Leitzmann said.
Ejaculation also may release psychological tension, quieting central nervous system activity that may contribute to prostate- cell division and cancer growth, the researchers said.
The scientists downplayed results showing frequent ejaculation appeared to reduce cancer risk because only 7 percent of men fell into the group reporting the most activity and just 59 of them developed prostate cancer, Leitzmann said in a telephone interview.
Almost all the previous research showed sexual activity increased cancer risk, he said. Those studies may have been biased because researchers asked patients to recall activities that occurred years earlier, before they were diagnosed with cancer and received treatment, which may interfere with sexual activity, he said.
``What we can say is that this hormonal hypothesis needs to be re-evaluated,'' said Leitzmann, who led the study when he was a post-doctoral student at Harvard. ``It would be good for future research to focus on different biological mechanisms.''

Keeping the Internet Free
From the New York Times, May 2, 2006 - "Net neutrality" is a concept that is still unfamiliar to most Americans, but it keeps the Internet democratic. Cable and telephone companies that provide Internet service are talking about creating a two-tiered Internet, in which Web sites that pay them large fees would get priority over everything else. Opponents of these plans are supporting Net-neutrality legislation, which would require all Web sites to be treated equally. Net neutrality recently suffered a setback in the House, but there is growing hope that the Senate will take up the cause.
One of the Internet's great strengths is that a single blogger or a small political group can inexpensively create a Web page that is just as accessible to the world as Microsoft's home page. But this democratic Internet would be in danger if the companies that deliver Internet service changed the rules so that Web sites that pay them money would be easily accessible, while little-guy sites would be harder to access, and slower to navigate. Providers could also block access to sites they do not like.
That would be a financial windfall for Internet service providers, but a disaster for users, who could find their Web browsing influenced by whichever sites paid their service provider the most money. There is a growing movement of Internet users who are pushing for legislation to make this kind of discrimination impossible. It has attracted supporters ranging from MoveOn.org to the Gun Owners of America. Grass-roots political groups like these are rightly concerned that their online speech could be curtailed if Internet service providers were allowed to pick and choose among Web sites.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee defeated a good Net-neutrality amendment last week. But the amendment got more votes than many people expected, suggesting that support for Net neutrality is beginning to take hold in Congress. In the Senate, Olympia Snowe, a Maine Republican, and Byron Dorgan, a North Dakota Democrat, are drafting a strong Net-neutrality bill that would prohibit broadband providers from creating a two-tiered Internet. Senators who care about the Internet and Internet users should get behind it.

Ottowa Pride Faces Bankruptcy
Wednesday, April 19, 2006
CREDIT: Pat McGrath, The Ottawa Citizen
Ottawa annual gay pride parade is in limbo after members of its organizing committee admitted it is "effectively bankrupt" and needs $25,000 or more from the city to stay afloat.
The Ottawa-Gatineau Pride committee says it can't pay back its estimated $187,000 debt unless it gets more funding to run the annual festival and parade.
The committee owes $66,000 to the City of Ottawa and about $100,000 to local businesses. About one-tenth of the $100,000 is in question because invoices are not available, according to Gordon Boissonneault, committee treasurer.
But the committee needs to borrow money to generate money in order to pay back what it owes.
"If we don't have a festival this year, then there's no guarantee we can pay back the creditors because they are our primary fund generator," said Tamara Stammis, a committee member.
The group did not have a full-time treasurer until this year, said Mr. Boissonneault, who recently took over the job. He is having trouble following the money trail because some records are missing and it is unclear who is still owed money.
"There's no record of proof that some of the contracts signed for 2005 were approved by the board of directors," said Ms. Stammis.
Meanwhile, the committee has sent a letter to known creditors, offering to pay 25 cents on the dollar, said Mr. Boissonneault. Most creditors have accepted the offer, he said.
But some say they are hesitant to give away more money.
As a business person, when you invest in something, you expect a return, said Robert Giacobbi, co-owner of Wilde's, the largest store in Ottawa to cater to a gay clientele.
He gave a $6,000 donation over two years while the parade was on Bank Street, but stopped when the parade route was changed.
Members of the board plan to approach the city before the end of the month for more cash to keep the event afloat for at least a year. Right now, there are few confirmed sponsors. If this is still the case at the end of April, the committee might have to pull the plug -- at least for this year, said Mr. Boissonneault.
"The psychological impact of missing a year would be pretty damaging to the gay community," Mr. Boissonneault said. "If we got $25,000 or $35,000, we could make this happen."
However, he and Ms. Stammis are optimistic that if the parade is cancelled this year, it could still run next year without losing momentum.
Mr. Boissonneault said Pride has four new committee members, including himself. He's taken the initiative to enforce a two-year maximum term for the volunteer committee and a re-payment plan to the creditors.
The recurring deficit situation has cast a cloud on an annual event that has grown, but remains difficult to keep going compared to pride events in bigger gay hubs like Montreal and Toronto.
Attendance at the Pride festival jumped from 3,000 in 2001 to more than 50,000 in 2002. However, money has been a problem. The entire board of directors resigned in 2003 because of the deficit.
Some disagree with the city handing out any more money to the festival.
"That's were we have an issue, going back to the city or taxpayers for more money, when they clearly have not shown the willingness or ability to keep their current financial commitments," said Adrienne Batra, spokeswoman for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.
"Putting additional taxpayers' money at risk is not a sound decision and city officials should resist the temptation to meet the request for funding," she said.
"We have absolutely no issue with the nature of the event. But what is at issue is whether or not public dollars should be going towards this event."

8 Inches & Other Chat Room Lies
Most of us have experienced first hand, lies on the Internet. We know that when someone announces in a full chat room that they are 6ft 1, weigh 150, and have an 8 inch cock, they are probably 5 ft 1, weigh 250, and have a 3 inch cock. We all know that people lie on the Internet. Some do it to try to get laid, some do it to be the center of attention in the chat room, some do it to hurt a local business, some do it because they are self-loathing, closeted, alone, and hate everyone who doesn't share their misery. The point is that everything that you read in a chat room is not true. If the lies somehow have an impact on you, then it pays to investigate, to verify, before you believe anything you read on Gay.com, AOL, or MySpace. I once had a heated argument with someone in a St. Louis AOL chat room who swore that The Complex had burnt down. They swore that they were there, saw the flames engulf the building, saw the fire trucks failing to put out the fire. I had just watched the local news on TV, saw that the fire involved a gas storage yard on the same street as The Complex but a few blocks away, that some or the tanks had exploded, but saw that The Complex was not on fire. I called someone from The Complex to confirm this. Even when confronted with the facts, this person in the chat room continued to announce to everyone that The Complex had burned down. We have all encountered these kind of chat room experts. Maybe the guy really believed he had seen The Complex burning, maybe he had some personal grudge against the bar, or maybe he worked for another bar and was trying to help his own bar by making people think The Complex was closed. Well, we all know that The Complex did not burn down. There have been rumors about bars for years...rumors that St. Louis University had bought Mag's and The Complex are probably some of the longest running rumors. We have been the victim of these rumors too. Most recently, last weekend, "the word" was out that we were closed on Easter. While I am sure that the 200 people who partied with us on Easter would be surprised that we were closed, the rumors still persist. We can laugh at it...Petrina Marie used to say that the important thing is that people are talking about us...but we are concerned that people who we know, who we respect, who we think have a lot of common sense, are actually believing these rumors. We have heard for several years that we were closing, often with very specific dates mentioned. Over the weekend, I was asked several times if it was true that we were closing in August. When I told them that we were not closing, they seemed incredulous, as though the rumors in chat rooms have to be more reliable then the owner of the biggest gay bar in St. Louis. One of the things that helps us weather slow nights, high gas prices, and Internet rumors is that we actually own the building that holds Faces on Fourth Street. Most bars don't own their buildings and have to pay rent to landlords. Faces, The Complex, Attitude's, and Clem's are the only St. Louis bars that we are aware of that own their own buildings. This gives us an advantage. So, feel free to cut and past this or email it to your friends. Faces on Fourth Street did not close on Easter. We had a great crowd. Faces on Fourth Street is not closing in August. We will soon be celebrating our 29th year as St. Louis' hottest afterhours gay dance bar. We just ran 3 pages of ads in the latest issue of EXP Magazine. We just printed new color flyers for our Wednesday and Sunday 18+ College Dance Parties. Both would be kind of stupid things to do if we were closing. We just had our most successful Lights Out/Underwear Party and we just had a great crowd for our Miss Faces 2006 Pageant. We have hosted more events, theme parties, recording artists, and adult video stars then any other gay bar in St. Louis. We are open 5 nights a week, with 3 18+ dance parties every week, and four nights of drag shows. Please tell your friends to laugh at the rumors, consider the source, and join us this week.

Sunday Easter Bonnet Contest & Kinky Boots Premiere Party

This Sunday, April 16th, is Easter. We thought it would be fun to bring back something that we used to do...an Easter Bonnet Contest. If you are like our Diva of Darkness, Siren, you may be asking "what is an Easter bonnet"? Basically it is a hat decorated with an Easter theme. You can buy them at dollar stores and redecorate them or you can click on the link at the bottom for instructions on how to make a lovely bonnet out of a cereal box. The idea is to be fun, campy, tasteless...This Sunday, wear your Easter bonnet to Faces on Fourth Street and get in free until 11 PM. Then compete for audience applause and you could win $50 cash plus a free pass to get in free through the end of May, 2006. Be creative...and twisted. Sunday, our Main Room doors open @ 10 PM. Our Pantyliners Drag Show starts @ 11 PM. Sunday is 18+ tp enter & 21+ to drink.
If that wasn't enough to get you excited about coming out to Faces on Fourth Street on Easter Sunday, there is more....this Sunday is our Kinky Boots Premiere Party. Kinky Boots is a new comedy, based on a true story, about a family owned British shoe factory, faced with closing, that finds success making Kinky Boots for transvestites. Bring a pair of new, or old but useable shoes on Sunday and there will a limited number of screening passes to see Kinky Boots on Tuesday, April 18th at a special advance screening. The shoes you bring in will be donated to the Homeless Empowerment Project. So, wear your Easter Bonnet to get in free before 11 PM, compete for a cash prize, and bring in your old shoes for free Kinky Boots screening passes. Wet Naked Guys

I don't speak German, so let me preface this with I have no idea what this group, Rammstein, is singing. Here is their website: RAMMSTEIN :: News. The video is kind of hot, though...a naked, sweaty band and a bunch of wet naked men. You can never have too many wet, naked men. Click here: http://www3.youtube.com/watch?v=AVAk_Gqaris
Pride Celebrations Aren't About Fitting In

June 24-25, 2006 is St. Louis' Gay Pride Celebration in Tower Grove Park on South Grand. Pride is St. Louis has struggled for the last few years with headline making scandals, controversial scholarship programs, and debates about what Pride is and what a Pride festival should be. Last year's Pridefest was marred by low attendance, internal fights between members, and the award of a controversial scholarship. Looking ahead, gay businesses are always called upon to support and promote the Pridefest. Faces on Fourth Street has been the sponsor of the Pridefest dance floor, providing the talent, equipment, scheduling, and even radio ads for a two day dance party at the Pridefest for the last 3 years. We are deciding now if, in the face of very little support for Pride from our community, what we can afford to contribute. It is expensive and we all have tighter budgets. Every year, there are some in our community who make the case that our Pride parade reinforces negative stereotypes, that Pride has become too political, and have gone so far as to argue that St. Louis doesn't need a Pride celebration. Last year, we tried something different and posted some of the history of Pride and the Stonewall riots, trying to make the case that Pride, from it's inception has been political, which was the point. When our own customers posted attacks of the drag community on our forum, we pointed out that drag queens were some of the first to stand up for our community; they were the ones arrested at the Stonewall Inn in NYC, the ones called upon to raise the money and confront the ignorance and prejudice. When members of our community attack the drag queens for marching in our Parade, because straight people will think we are all like that, they miss the point. With Pride approaching, and our own controversial Pridefest looming, we thought it would be worth talking about why we celebrate Pride and what our Pridefest should be. Blog Proceed at Your Own Risk has a great posting on Pride. He writes: After reading an article about a debate to "censor" or make Canadian Pride more "family-friendly," I realized that I was wrong. I had convinced myself that the primary purpose of a Pride Parade was to send a message to the majority: we are just like you. We are cops, doctors, accountants, teachers, parents, brothers, daughters and politicians; in short, we are GAY, "good as you."
But one of the Canadian organizers believes that the goal of the parades is to allow people to express themselves in a comfortable environment. "If that's offensive to other people, then those who feel offended need to examine why they are offended....the Pride Parade is a celebration of a human being's right to honest and free self-expression. It's a celebration of self-fulfillment in a safe, celebratory and supportive environment. It's a golden moment, once a year, when she can publicly be who she is without inhibition, without reservation and with pride and support....and, most importantly, on Main Street. Open, out and proud. And so I realized that I was wrong. The message of Pride is not acceptance of gay men and women, the message of Pride is the right of every man and women, gay and straight to live in honesty, freedom and safety. Pride belongs to everyone, gay and straight. Pride Parades celebrate the right of every man and woman on this planet to self-fulfillment." Wednesday Battle of the Amateur Drag Queens
If you have not been to the Wednesday Battle of the Amateur Drag Queens @ Faces on Fourth Street, then you are missing a fun show and great party. We launched the Original Wednesday Battle of the Amateur Drag Queens over 5 years ago. The Drag Battle gives newcomers, people who have never done drag before a chance to perform before a live audience. In the last 5 years we have seen some raw talent that has improved and grown to be major performers in St. Louis. Siren, Madison Elise, and Dayona Hilton were all contestants in our Wednesday Drag Battle. Our Drag Battle grew to the point where we sometimes have 10 to 12 contestants. We were the first to launch our Drag Battle and the first to open our doors to 18+ customers. Our Wednesday Drag Battle starts @ 11 PM so you can catch the show, dance a little, and still make it home in time to get some rest. Doors open Wednesday @ 10 PM. Now we know that are some people in St. Louis who miss our show every Wednesday. They have a routine. They go to certain bars every night and never deviate. So, they end up sitting in an empty St. Louis bar until 3 AM, then head over to Faces, after our show is over and after the crowd has thinned out. We encourage you to try something different and break up your week by heading to Faces on Fourth Street on Wednesday to see the Battle of the amateur Drag Queens @ 11 PM. Siren and Victoria Rose host the show. If you want to enter it, bring two songs on quality CD, bring two outfits, and a lot of friends to cheer you on. The contest is open to people who have not done drag for money. Wednesdays are 18+ to enter & 21+ to drink.

Madonna World Tour - St. Louis Skipped Again

Road trip to Chicago, anyone? Once again, St. Louis has been skipped over by Madonna's "Confession" tour. This has been going on for years; complete with rumors that some local radio station had pissed Madonna off years ago. We don't know the true story but we do know that there are a lot of very disappointed Madonna fans in St. Louis. You can read about the tour and pick your road trip destination here: Madonna - Confessions Tour 2006
$1 Sake
Wednesday nights have a new twist! Enjoy $1 chilled Gekkeikan sake Wednesdays @ Faces on Fourth Street. Gekkeikan sake is brewed (like wine and beer) from rice and made in America (in California). For something different, head to Faces on Fourth Street Wednesday night, sample our $1 sake or our $2 Bacardi Silver, $2 Peels (new fruit beverage from AB), $2.50 Long Island Ice Tea, $1.50 draft, or $1.25 Pabst Blue Ribbon cans all night. Wednesdays are 18+ to enter & 21+ to drink.
Lube Wrestling

We plan to start a monthly Lube Wrestling Contest this Spring. We are looking for contestants. If you wrestled in high school or college, and aren't ashamed of your body, then we are looking for you. We are still working on the rules, but basically we need guys to wrestle in a pool of ID Lube. There will be a winner and a loser of each match. There will be cash prizes for the winner and loser. There will be several matches each night. Hydrate in Chicago has been hosting monthly lube wrestling for quite some time and they are very hot. So, if you want to play, please email us with your pictures to facesnolmt@aol.com. We are planning on the Lube night to be on Friday nights, so 18+ guys can enter.
Did you have a good time Saturday night?
We thought the crowd was great Saturday night. The Cabaret was full. The Main Room (dance floor) was hopping. Customers asked who the DJ was (resident DJ Pavel was spinning all night in the Main Room) and they said he was great. We need you to tell your friends how much fun you had @ Faces on Fourth Street. If you are reading this, you are in a very select group. Most people don't visit our website. Most people don't read EXP Magazine. Most people rely on conversations with friends to find out what is happening around town. Most people didn't even know that St. Louis bars closed an hour early last Saturday until the lights went up and the music stopped. Most of our customers last Saturday probably did not even decide to come to Faces until they were kicked out of JJ's, Mag's, or The Complex @ 2 AM. We need to reach those people, your friends. So, this week, please take a few minutes, tell your friends how much fun you had @ Faces on Fourth Street. My mom used to use phone trees to organize the other moms when I was in grade school; to get the word out about school events. Later, when I was involved in school tax levy campaigns, we used phone trees and phone banks to call voters. The idea, you were responsible for calling one branch on a phone tree. We relayed information, and those people that we called were then responsible for calling another branch on the phone tree. We could get a message to thousands of people with just a few phone calls. We don't want your friends phone numbers. But if you could help us by calling & emailing 10 friends about Faces, about what a great time you had last Saturday, and by asking your friends to call or email 10 friends, we could reach a large portion of our customer base in just a few hours. Your friends will believe you more then an email from us. If you tell them you had a great time, that you plan on going back next Friday, April 7th for our Lights Out/Underwear Party or next Saturday, April 8th to watch the drag show in the Cabaret, we could have another great party.

Advocate Magazine: Is American Idol's Mandisa Anti-Gay
The Advocate Magazine on American Idol's Mandisa:
"Is an American Idol finalist a proponent of the "ex-gay" movement?
That's what some viewers are asking following Mandisa's performance and on-camera comments during Tuesday's live show. For the episode's “Songs of the 21st Century” theme, Mandisa chose the Mary Mary gospel belter “Wanna Praise You,” preceding the song with the following introduction: "This song goes out to everybody that wants to be free. Your addiction, lifestyle, or situation may be big, but God is bigger!" In the taped segment beforehand, Mandisa said the song "means a lot to me because it's a testimony that there's nothing too hard for God."
On the American Idol Web site, the 29-year-old Mandisa, a native of Antioch, Tenn., lists author and lecturer Beth Moore as her personal American idol. Mandisa writes on the site that Moore “inspires me to live more like Jesus, and I want to do the same.”
Moore is the author of such books as Breaking Free: Making Liberty in Christ a Reality in Life, which contains the following passage: "A young Christian girl has a harsh abusive father. She grows up with a fear and distaste for men. Satan supplies a slightly older woman who seems tender and caring. The comforting relationship turns into a physical relationship, so the young woman assumes she must be homosexual. In her heart she knows what she is doing is wrong, but she feels helpless without her new comforter. Soon she starts socializing with other women who are practicing homosexuality, because they will support her new habit with the lies she needs to continue. She avoids the Bible and chooses books that advocate homosexuality. She drops all relationships except those that support the fraudulent attachment with lies.... Scary, isn't it?"
According to Moore's Web site, she founded the Living Proof Ministries in 1994 with the purpose of teaching women how to love and live on God's Word. Part of Living Proof Ministries' mission statement includes the statement “We believe that 'Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners' and can fully redeem and powerfully use even those who consider they have been the worst.” (1 Timothy 1:15). She also provides links to "ex-gay" groups including Exodus International and Exodus Youth.
Idol representatives told The Advocate they don't comment on the personal lives of contestants. (Neal Broverman, The Advocate) .

Networks Ban Gay Ad
From the San Francisco Chronicle, an article by Wyatt Buchanan, "The nation's major television networks have rejected an ad that shows a gay couple and others being banished from a church, saying it violates their rules against controversial or religious advertising.
The 30-second commercial for the United Church of Christ will begin airing on cable networks and Spanish-language stations next week. The ad, called "Ejector," shows a gay couple, a single mother, a disabled man and others flying out of their pews as a wrinkled hand pushes a red button.
Text on the screen reads, "God doesn't reject people. Neither do we," and a voiceover says, "The United Church of Christ. No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you're welcome here."
The church tried to run a similar ad in December 2004 in which bouncers outside a church stopped gay couples, racial minorities and others from entering. The networks also rejected that ad.
The decision by CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox to decline the latest advertisement shows the networks have a narrow view of acceptable images of gays and lesbians, church leader Ron Buford said Monday.
"They are saying, 'You can entertain on 'Will & Grace' and 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,' but when it comes to showing you as whole people with the church, that is going to far," Buford said. Can You Say, LOSERS?
It is Friday, March 31st at roughly 11 PM. We just got a phone call from Victims of Desire...and they are so sorry, they aren't coming. OK, join me....everyone together...Victims of Desire are fucking losers. This group, claims to be professionals....they claim they have never cancelled a booking in 22 years....well Faces is their first...after advertising them for the last 6 weeks in EXP (gee, do you think they offered to reimburse us for their screwing over Faces...nope)...They call us roughly 2 hours before they were supposed to be on stage....do you think maybe they knew earlier today since they live in Ohio and we aren't exactly a two hour drive from Ohio? We have had pretty good luck with dancers, video stars, DJ's, and recording artists...most of them are professional and show up when they promise to be here....in fact I can coumt on one hand the number of times one of our bookings has been a "no show". Victims of Desire is obviously not...so do us a favor...pass this on to everyone you know....Victims of Desires...LOSERS! We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you decide to come party with us this weekend anyway.
It's Friday...18+ College Dance Party & Hot Male Dancers

Bahamas Ban Brokeback Mountain
According to the Chicago Daily Herald, in an AP story, " A Bahamian government board's decision to ban the movie "Brokeback Mountain" has prompted charges of discrimination and censorship in the island chain.
Gay rights groups and others have called on the Plays and Films Control Board to reverse its decision prohibiting theaters from showing the award-winning movie about a troubled love affair between two cowboys.
"You have a group of people who are telling grown men and women what they can and cannot watch," said Philip Burrows, a theater director in the island chain. "I cannot understand denying people the right to make their own choices."
Theaters in Nassau, the capital, already had begun to advertise the movie Friday when the board announced its ban at the request of the Bahamas Christian Council.
"The board chose to ban it because it shows extreme homosexuality, nudity and profanity, and we feel that it has no value for the Bahamian public," Chavasse Turnquest-Liriano, liaison officer for the control board, said Wednesday.
Bahamas Christian Council sucessfully lobbied to get "Brokeback Mountain" banned in the Bahamas.
The Rainbow Alliance, a gay rights group, called the ban a "farce," and said most Bahamians reject the idea a "small group of appointed individuals ... can provide the moral compass for the entire country."
Some have suggested the board could have simply issued a rating that would have barred anyone younger than 18 from seeing the film.
Critics also noted even some countries where homosexuality is illegal have allowed the movie to be shown in theaters.
"This is not a movie to be banned. This is not a subject to be censored," said Bahamas resident Liz Roberts, who has worked in film production. "It is a subject to be aired, a subject to be confronted openly."
"Brokeback Mountain," which won critical acclaim and three Oscars, including best director for Ang Lee, has also been banned in mainland China. Turkey has restricted viewing to viewers older than 18." Funny thing about the Bahamas; they are still a contititutional monarchy with the Queen of England their official head of state. Maybe it is time for the Queen to step in before some other queens decide to boycott the Bahamas. Planning a cruise? It appears that gays are not welcome in the Bahamas.

Brokeback Mountain DVD Hits the Stores April 4th

"Brokeback Mountain" surprised a lot of people by doing well in some very "red states" and conservative cities. We think it would be cool if "Brokeback Mountain" broke records when it goes on sale on Tuesday, April 4, 2006. So, this is us doing our part to remind you to flood the stores on Tuesday to pick it up...or order it now from Amazon.com. Either way works for us. One blogger on Proceed at Your Own Risk suggested that, "Go buy a copy and give it to a straight person who hasn't seen the movie. People love free stuff no matter who they are and I would put forth the argument that many heterosexuals who wouldn't otherwise take the time to watch Brokeback Mountain, will do so if it's received as a gift.
Now don't go giving a copy to the obviously gay-friendly, target the almost gay-friendly or better yet, complete strangers. Give a copy to a straight family member who's not so sure about you and about "it." Be creative: a cop, a librarian, a teacher, a mother pushing a baby carriage, a bank teller, a grocery store clerk, a father playing with his son in the park, a co-worker. Do it anonymously if you must, but do it. I hear that George W. has yet to see the movie so feel free to mail one to the White House." Have you tried AB's new Peels
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch had an article on March, 29, 2006 about Anheuser-Busch's new product, Peels, a fruit-juice flavored malt beverage. For those who like to be the first to try new stuff, we have been serving Peels for a few weeks @ Faces on Fourth Street. The Post wrote, "Earlier this month, Anheuser-Busch quietly rolled out Peels nationwide, with its four flavor combinations: blueberry-pomegranate, strawberry-passion fruit, pear-lemon and cranberry-peach...To make its product distinctive from other flavored beverages, Anheuser-Busch is using only natural fruit juices in the beverage, forgoing artificial flavors. Also, Peels contains no preservatives. " Peels is one of our specials on Wednesday nights...available for only $2 or try Peels on your next visit to Faces on Fourth Street this weekend for only $4.50. The Peels website lists some interesting cocktails you can make by mixing Peels with vodka. Look for us to be offering that sometime soon.

Risky sex more likely for young men with positive body images
Reuters writer Anne Harding reports that, "Young men who feel good about their looks are more likely than their peers with a less positive body image to engage in risky sexual behavior, a new study of college students shows.
The men who were most satisfied with their appearance, and the most appearance-oriented -- meaning they were highly invested in their looks and considered appearance to be important -- were also the most likely to have sex without condoms and to have sex with multiple partners, Dr. Eva S. Lefkowitz of Pennsylvania State University in University Park and colleagues report. AP Reports AIDS Drug Shows Prevention Promise
From time to time we will use our blog to report, comment, or complain about the news. Today seems to be a reason to celebrate: Gilead AIDS Drugs Show Prevention Promise By MARILYNN MARCHIONE AP Medical Writer © 2006 The Associated Press
ATLANTA — Twenty-five years after the first AIDS cases jolted the world, scientists think they soon may have a pill that people could take to keep from getting the virus that causes the global killer.
Two drugs already used to treat HIV infection have shown such promise at preventing it in monkeys that officials last week said they would expand early tests in healthy high-risk men and women around the world.
"This is the first thing I've seen at this point that I think really could have a prevention impact," said Thomas Folks, a federal scientist since the earliest days of AIDS. "If it works, it could be distributed quickly and could blunt the epidemic."
Condoms and counseling alone have not been enough HIV spreads to 10 people every minute, 5 million every year. A vaccine remains the best hope but none is in sight.
If larger tests show the drugs work, they could be given to people at highest risk of HIV from gay men in American cities to women in Africa who catch the virus from their partners. Read the whole AP story here: http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/printstory.mpl/ap/health/3752244

Drag Shows & Our Cabaret

A few weeks ago we re-opened our Cabaret on Saturday nights. We have struggled with a dilemma for quite some time. Faces on Fourth Street has an incredible Cabaret. We are very proud of the space, particularly the art installations throughout the room and stairway. We frequently have a problem filling the room though, which forced us to close the room for the last few months. When we remodeled the Cabaret three years ago, we did it in an attempt to jumpstart the crowds. The room is expensive to open and operate. We had already moved our other shows to the Main Room, in part to accommodate our 18+ crowds and in part because it was hard to make all three floors look crowded. Customers would frequently walk in, see an empty Main Room (dance floor), and assume the bar was dead, when in fact the crowds were spread over three floors. Our dance crowd rarely showed up on weekends until after 3 AM, so it made more sense to move the shows to the Main Room. We hated having this great room, sitting unused most of the time. We tried to promote the idea of coming early for a drag show then staying to enjoy another room of music, but that idea, while popular in most major cities, never seemed to click with our customers. A handful of customers would linger to enjoy the music, leaving us again with an empty room. So we closed the room, dropped the Saturday shows, and tried to focus on our other show nights (Sunday, Wednesday, & Friday). We continued to get customers on Saturday who expected a show (which seems to show how effective our ads are), so we decided to re-launch the Saturday shows, with a later start time (1 AM) and a longer run time (they end at 4 AM). We moved Steve-O, our Cherry Lounge DJ to the Basement several months ago and that too had met with mixed results...most customers I have spoken with had spent many nights in the Basement, read our ads and our emails, but did not know we had a DJ spinning. So far, our results for the Saturday shows have been disappointing, particularly since we introduced a March special, with no cover until 2 AM. With a later show start, a larger show cast, no cover until 2 AM, and the move to the Cabaret, and we still can't seem to reach our niche. We frequently got complaints from customers who wanted to dance, because the drag show was on our dance floor. Since the Saturday show move, I am only aware of 2-3 customers who actually danced in the Main Room before 3 AM. We need your help. We have a great venue for shows, great entertainers on stage (I think there were 9 last Saturday night), and a later start time, all per requests from customers. Help us keep the room open. We are reaching the time of year when the Cabaret will become even more costly to operate, when we must decide first if we can even afford to replace the rooftop AC units that were stolen last fall, then if we can afford to pay to cool the room all summer. We would love to be able to make the Saturday show work, then work on opening the Cabaret on other nights as well. We can only do that with your support.
Thank You To Our Forum Contributors
First, we want to thank everyone who has visited, read, and contributed thoughtful posts on our website forum. We learned a lot about what you thought and we hope our responses helped answer some of your questions and concerns. We have used many of your suggestions and we will continue to listen to you. While our website forum continues to generate interesting comments, we feel it is time try something new. We were one of the first gay bars in town to use a forum to communictae with customers and we are one of the few gay bars in town that actually keeps their website current with regular updates. The hottest new trend on the Internet is blogging. Blogs have quickly evolved from mind-numbing personal diaries to investigative reporting. Blogs frequently "get the story" first, beating traditional media to the big stories. We venture into this new, blogosphere with no illusions that our blog, Faces Full Frontal will be anything more then an extension of our website, www.FacesNoLimits.com. While our website continues to be our primary Internet vehicle, we hope the immediacy of a blog will create more interest in Faces on Fourth Street, our events, and our promotions. We hope to use this blog to improve our communication with you. So, this blog will replace our forum for now. We will work on it, try to make it an effective tool, see if we can make it interesting, then, spin it off from our website, letting it stand alone and eventually we will put the forum back up.
